Heart Health for Real Life (Healthy Hearts)

THE HEALTHY HEARTS PILOT PROGRAM

You are invited to take part in a pilot (meaning: a new service or way of doing things) designed to
support people to improve their heart health through movement, healthy eating, education,
and wellbeing approaches. The goal of the programme is to help you build confidence,
understand your heart, and learn tips to make small everyday changes that can reduce the
risk of heart disease.

This programme has been co-designed with your local General Practice, Burwood Health, in
partnership with Pegasus Health.

There are two weekly group sessions of 2.5 hours each, located at the Aranui Wainoni
Community Centre at 31 Hampshire Street, Aranui. The Community Centre has a welcoming
atmosphere, wheelchair-accessible car parking and entrances, a large modern commercial
kitchen and multiple toilets/bathrooms.

NOTE: There will be a Supermarket Tour at PAKn’SAVE Wainoni during the first session,
however, we will start and finish at the Aranui Wainoni Community Centre.

During the sessions you will be provided:

  • Heart-healthy kai/food to try
  • Water, tea and coffee

  • To say thanks, a PAKn’SAVE voucher will be given to those who complete both
    sessions.

RISKS & BENEFITS
Risks
There have been no significant risks identified for taking part in this program. The program
includes gentle exercise and learning about heart health in a small group, supported by health
professionals. During the first session, we will travel to and from the supermarket (under 1km
each way). We have options available to transport people. If any activity does not feel right for
you, you can stop at any time.

POSSIBLE BENEFITS:

You may:

  • Improve your understanding of heart health
  • Feel more confident about making healthy changes
  • Learn skills for healthy kai/food choices
  • Improve sleep and/or stress levels
  • Strengthen social connection by being part of a group
  • You may notice improvements in blood pressure, blood test results, fitness, or general
wellbeing in the weeks and months following the program.

Not all benefits can be guaranteed, and not all benefits will be seen within the timeframe of the
programme as some of it will need ongoing effort. Many people find these types of
programmes supportive and encouraging.
