Introducing Nurse Prescribers at Burwood Health
At Burwood Health, we’re committed to making healthcare more accessible, timely, and effective for our patients. One way we’re doing this is by expanding our team to include Registered Nurse Prescribers—a highly qualified group of nurses who are specially trained to assess and treat a range of common health conditions.
What Is a Nurse Prescriber?
A Nurse Prescriber is a Registered Nurse (RN) who has completed additional postgraduate education and clinical training, allowing them to prescribe certain medications within a clearly defined scope. This includes care for common and long-term conditions such as asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, skin infections, and contraception needs.
Nurse Prescribers work closely with our doctors, nurse practitioners, and pharmacists to ensure safe, coordinated, and patient-centered care.
How Is a Nurse Prescriber Different from a Nurse Practitioner?
While both Nurse Prescribers and Nurse Practitioners are highly skilled healthcare professionals, there are important differences in their qualifications and scope of practice:
|
Nurse Prescriber 18_42b18d-1c> |
Nurse Practitioner 18_8ceb20-52> |
|---|---|
|
Registered Nurse with postgraduate training in prescribing 18_ae61f2-0c> |
Holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Nursing 18_877482-c5> |
|
Can prescribe from a specific list of medications 18_0508a8-b0> |
Can independently diagnose, treat, and prescribe across a wide range of conditions 18_7fbead-51> |
|
Works within defined clinical guidelines, usually for common or stable conditions 18_13cdcc-85> |
Has a broader, more autonomous scope of practice 18_8a9af2-e6> |
|
Works as part of a collaborative team 18_fa311a-8f> |
Can act as a lead clinician in patient care 18_0daa66-51> |
What Does This Mean for You?
Seeing a Nurse Prescriber at Burwood Health means you may be able to access care and prescriptions more quickly—especially for well-managed or common conditions. You’ll still receive the same high-quality care, and if your situation requires more complex treatment, our Nurse Prescribers can refer you to a doctor or Nurse Practitioner as needed.
If you contact the practice and request an urgent / same day appointment, you will speak with one of our qualified nurses for triage.
The triage process allows a nurse to assess the urgency and nature of your health concern and then determine the appropriate course of action. This may be an appointment with a Doctor or Nurse Practitioner at the practice or another treatment option (ie. attend Pegasus 24 Hours Surgery).
However, in some instances, the nurse triage process may turn into a nurse consultation over the phone. If this occurs, our team will advise you of the options available to you before proceeding. You will be able to either book an appointment with a Doctor/Nurse Practitioner, or continue on the call. There is a charge for Nurse Phone Consultations.
